Visa
In accordance with the purpose of your visit to China, Chinese visa involves several types such as tourist visa, business visa, student visa, work visa, resident visa etc. If you come to China for sightseeing, you only need to apply for a toursit visa from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your own country.

Application Requirements:
1. Applicant’ passport with at least 6 months remaining validity and available blank pages for visa;
2. Properly complete Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China
3. A recent passport-size color photo with white background stuck on the visa application form
For tourism, applicants also need to provide the below required documents.
4. Under some situations, the original and copy of Chinese Hotel Booking and Return Air Ticket are required.
5. For applicants who will travel into Tibet, they must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit. This can either be obtained by joining a group or by obtaining the permit from Tourism Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region.
Special Cases:
1. If you are a Taiwan compatriot who want to travel to the mainland, you can obtain a travel permit from the Hong Kong Consulate of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
2. If you are Hongkong or Macao resident, you should hold a Re-entry cards of Hong Kong and Macao compatriots for travel or family visits to the mainland.
3. Those who come back to the mainland via the United States, Japan and other countries can obtain travel permit from Chinese embassies and consulates; overseas Chinese can enter China without visas. They can enter and leave China with valid passports or other ID cards issued by relevant departments of the Chinese govemment.
4. If you are traveling in an organised tour group you might not have an individual visa in your passport. Instead, the tour leader will have a general one for the whole group. In such situations you will supply your details to the organiser before you travel and then you have no further concerns.

It is not too much trouble to transfer to Hong Kong or Macao and apply for a new visa. You can get a new one in two or three days. (Even though Hong Kong and Macao are now officially part of China, going there still counts as leaving the country.).
