Zhujiajiao, the Picturesque Water Village
Jul 21st
The picturesque Zhu Jia Jiao is a classic water village, over 400 years old with a signature five-arch bridge spanning the Cao Gang River. Zhu Jia Jiao was an important town for local trade, shipping goods in and out of its manmade canals to the river. After about 40 minutes drive from the city, you will arrive at Zhujiajiao-the Ancient Water Town.
Zhujiajiao, sometimes called the Venice of Shanghai is an ancient water town well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1700 years. Covering an area of 47 square kilometers, the little fan-shaped town glimmers like a bright pearl in the landscape of lakes and mountains. The village prospered through clothing and rice businesses.
Zhujiajiao boasts imposing gardens as well as ancient dwellings built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among the ancient architecture, Ke Zhi Yuan is the largest manorial garden in the town. The garden is commonly named ‘Ma Family Garden’ after a former host named Ma Wenqin.
Located in Xijin Street in the northern part of town, Ke Zhi Yuan features beautiful sightseeing and quiet and secluded surroundings. It consists mainly of three parts, including a hall area, an artificial hill area and a garden area. In the artificial hill area, there is magnificent symbolic architecture – a foursquare five-story building, on the top of which stands a diametric pavilion named ‘Moon View Pavilion.’ This building is considered the tallest architecture in the town.
Of the 36 bridges, one of the main attractions is the Fangsheng Bridge that is about 70-meters long. It rests on 5 arches and is 5.8 meters tall. It was built in 1812. It is said to be the largest stone arch bridge in Shanghai. One way to see the bridges is to go on boat rides. There are small boats that seat about 5 large people or 6 smaller people.

Originally built in the beginning of the 15th century, City God Temple is a group of palaces that take up an overall area of over 10 thousand square meters. Today, this prestigious site is more than carved beams, painted rafters, cyan tiles and red eaves, it is a collection of folk art, such as dough figurines, cock fighting, epistle writing, fortune telling and magic tricks, and also a sea of local snacks. It is a showcase of Shanghai marketplace culture. Men wearing long braid and robe have disappeared, but the tumultuous scenes have remained until today. More >
